AJ’s 5 Must Do African Beaches

Boasting 38 countries with 18, 950 miles of coastline , Africa has no shortage of amazing and pristine beaches. Africa has a beach for everyone, whether you are looking for culture/ history, snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, top tier beach resorts, or just relaxing and catching some sun rays. With so many different African beaches to choose from,it is almost a sin not to choose all of them. So here are  AJ’s 5 Must Do African Beaches.

1. Nungwi Beach, Zanzibar Island, Tanzania

Located off the Tanzanian coast, Zanzibar Island is a must do magical experience. The beaches are exquisite and extraordinary, including Nungwi Beach, as well as the island’s rich history.  Take in the scenes of wooded dhows in clear turquoise waters and bustling Swahili  markets and coastal trading centers.  Stone Town is one of the most iconic and photogenic places to experience in Africa. 

Beginning as a small fishing village, Nungwi beach has grown into a popular vacation destination.  Located at the northern tip of the island, it’s the place where beautiful white sands with palm trees meet the emerald colored ocean. Nungwi also offers excellent offshore diving and snorkeling.

2. Anse Source D’Argent, La Digue Island, Seychelles

Known  as a popular destination for the rich and famous, the Seychelle Islands are an archipelago located in the Indian Ocean, off the east coast of Madagascar. It has several spectacular beaches scattered throughout the islands. Its most beautiful beach is located on the island of La Digue, Anse Source d’Argent. It appears unreal, with the snow white sand beach, distinctive and unique boulders, and  radiant turquoise waters. The beach also has great offshore snorkeling.

3. Naama Bay, Egypt

Sandwich between Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and the Red Sea and located in the beach resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, Naama Bay is Egypt’s little slice of heaven and paradise. Naama Bay is known for the place where white sand beach meets the clear, calm, blue waters of the Gulf of Aqaba as well as to catch a glimpse of the jagged Saudi Arabian coastline in the distance.  It is famous for being an excellent place for all levels of diving as well as excellent snorkeling sites. The most iconic sites are its coral reefs and diving site at Ras Mohammed National Park. Naama Bay is an excellent beach destination for both families and couples.

4. Shela Beach, Lamu Island, Kenya

Looking to indulge yourself in Kenyan Beaches, look no further than Lamu Island, located off the coast north of the port town of Mombasa. Shela beach boasts crystal clear turquoise waters, palm trees, and white sand beaches. It is an excellent place for snorkeling and diving. Shela is also near the Shela Village, where time moves slowly and you can sit and gaze out on the Indian Ocean watching the dhows pass along the ocean.  While at Lamu Island, why not take your own dhow and island hop through the archipelago and discover hidden beaches.

While at Lamu Island, it will be great to indulge in Kenya’s history and culture, by heading over to Lamu Town. Spend time getting lost in its narrow streets. Lamu Town is one the oldest settlements in Kenya, dating back 700 years and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

5. Bom Bom Beach, Principe

Located off the West African coast in the Gulf of Guinea and belonging to the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe, Bom Bom Beach is nature lover’s paradise.  Bom Bom Beach is on the smaller island of Principe’s northern shore. 

As a perfect choice for nature lovers, the best time to visit is the dry season  between June and October. Bird watching, whale watching, deep sea fishing as well as snorkeling are some of the most popular activities for its visitors. Bom Bom Beach also has opportunities to see the nesting of the sea turtles.
